In 1995, Hillary Rodham Clinton accompanied her husband, Bill Clinton, to Belfast when he became the first serving U.S. President to visit Northern Ireland.

This would be the first of many symbolic visits undertaken by the Clintons in the coming years as they made the peace process one of their great passions.

As First Lady of the United States, Hillary often shone a spotlight on the role of women in the peace process, and spoke of their unwavering commitment to peace despite ‘a quarter century of bloodshed and strife and embedded sexism.’

In 2021 she was appointed the first female Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.
