WAVE Trauma Centre was established in 1991 by women who had all lost their partners during the Troubles, with the initial goal of empowering other women similarly affected.
In 1995, the remit expanded to include all those who were injured and/or traumatised by the conflict in Northern Ireland, and this has since become the largest cross community victims’ group in the country.
In three decades, WAVE has worked to provide support for victims and has been influential in policy making both nationally and internationally.
WAVE, led by CEO Sandra Peake MBE, has also had a tangible impact on the training and education of those dealing with trauma victims through partnerships with frontline healthcare providers at Queen’s University Belfast, the establishment of the BSc Trauma degree pathway (a first in the UK and Ireland), and a new online Post Graduate Trauma Studies programme with University College Cork.
