Ongoing peace work

Peace is a process, not an event. There are hundreds of organisations on the island of Ireland who continue the mission of the Good Friday Agreement today.

This is an introduction to a few of the organisations advancing peace work across the island:

The Community Relations Council (CRC) aims to promote a peaceful and shared society based on reconciliation and mutual trust.

Led by the National Women’s Council (NWC), the All-Island Women’s Forum aims to address underrepresentation of women and further develop women’s role in peace-building and civic society.

The Northern Ireland Rural Women’s Network (NIRWN) was established in 2006 ‘to promote and support rural women in rural Northern Ireland, with a focus on peace building.

The Integrated Education Fund work to a vision where children from different traditions are learning and playing together at the same school, helping to build a society where there is respect and celebration, not fear, of religious and cultural diversity.

Youth Action, NI Youth Forum, NI Youth Assembly offer cross-community initiatives for young people.

The John and Pat Hume Foundation is developing a dynamic programme and school resources, inspired by John’s philosophy of the power of quiet leaders.

The Irish government's Shared Island initiative aims to harness the full potential of the Good Friday Agreement to enhance cooperation, connection and mutual understanding on the Island of Ireland and to engage with all communities and traditions to build consensus around a shared future.

The 4 Corners Festival seeks to inspire people from across Belfast to transform it for the peace and wellbeing of all. It consists of innovative events designed to entice people out of their own ‘corners’ of the city and into new places where they will encounter new perspectives, new ideas, and new friends.

The Glencree Centre for Peace & Reconciliation works to prevent and transform political and inter-communal conflict and build peaceful, inclusive societies.

Northern Ireland Alternatives (NIA) is a government accredited restorative justice programme that aims to promote and develop non-violent community responses to the issues of low-level crime and anti-social behaviour in areas across Northern Ireland.
