As the Troubles raged, the 1980s were characterised by assassinations and killings carried out by on both sides of the conflict.

Already a region divided at the start of the decade, the Troubles reached their height throughout the 1980s with the loss of over 700 lives.

Margaret Thatcher was in power in the UK government, the hunger strikes took place in the Maze prison and bombing campaigns reached into England.

Meanwhile, women in Northern Ireland were continuing to lead the way in fighting for rights, integration and against poor housing and low education attainment.
